Rating System

What are rating systems?

It is a content based rating system similar to the movie rating system to allow for the informed consent we need to help our children pick books that are age appropriate.

We hope that our library board will adopt the Universal Book Rating system to help our librarians when adding more books to our collection so they are shelving them properly.  We ask that books rated 3 or higher be put on the adult shelves of our local library.  Or that all books are rated to allow parents to make the infomred consent lacking from authors and publishers on the dusk jackets of books.  This website breaks it down and allows for anyone to see what a book is rated according to the content the books reviewed contains.

Who is going to decide which books fall into which ratings?

Will you? If you want to review a book you are free to and if you follow the suggested guidelines to allow all readers to determine informed consent regarding indisputable things like porgnography and profanity.

We are not in charge of the booklooks.org website or database that I have proposed/referenced as an idea. I am open to any ideas that will give minors the protection they need.

Please check out the rating guidelines for more details. Every review has a profanity count, summary of concerns, rating, and then most have pages of citations for reference. Maybe just putting this resource in the hands of our librarians will help them to be more informed themselves when categorizing and shelving books, or when deciding what material to purchase.
